EU-RL Proficiency test on Determination of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PBDEs and HBCDDs in Liver of Cattle 2017

This proficiency test (PT) on the determination of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs, indicator PCBs, PBDEs and HBCDDs in liver of cattle is organized by the EU-RL for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food to be performed between August and October 2017.
The objective is to assess analytical performance of laboratories and the interlaboratory comparability of results from analyses of relevant parameters (17 PCDD/F, 12 dioxin-like PCBs, 6 indicator PCBs, 10 PBDEs, 3 HBCDDs) in one sample of liver of cattle.
In addition, this PT is focusing on the reliability of analytical results for PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PBDEs and HBCDDs in a more complex food matrix. Therefore, this PT is also open for other official laboratories and commercial laboratories in order to check the comparability of results not only within the EURL/NRL/OFL network, but also with official and private laboratories performing official control or self-control of feed business operators.

Guidance Document on Measurement Uncertainty for Laboratories performing PCDD/F and PCB Analysis using Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry

This document on measurement uncertainty was developed within the network of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food and the respective National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) of member states. Detailed guidance is given on the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in the quantitative analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), to assist laboratories performing official feed and food control within the European Union, especially National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) and Official Laboratories (OFLs). It provides useful key elements contributing to further harmonization of compliance assessment and outlines practical aspects related to measurement uncertainty estimation.
A new concept placing special emphasis on the inclusion of current method performance data is presented. The concept covers the full analytical process from sample receipt at the laboratory through sample storage, preparation and analysis, to data processing and reporting. In particular, it focuses on the role of analytical variability generally known as "measurement uncertainty" (MU) in the interpretation of analytical results for assessment of their compliance with a specification.

EU-RL Proficiency test on Determination of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in Palm Fatty Acid Distillate 2017

This proficiency test (PT) on the determination of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs and indicator PCBs in palm fatty acid distillate was organized by the EU-RL for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food to be performed between February and April 2017.
The objective was to assess analytical performance of laboratories and the interlaboratory comparability of results from analyses of all relevant parameters (17 PCDD/F, 12 dioxin-like PCBs, 6 indicator PCBs) in one sample of palm fatty acid distillate.

In addition, this specific PT was focusing on the reliability of analytical results for PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in a more complex feed matrix. Therefore, this PT is also open for other official laboratories and commercial laboratories in order to check the comparability of results not only within the EURL/NRL/OFL network, but also with official and private laboratories performing official control or self-control of feed business operators.

Guidance Document on Estimation of LOD and LOQ

Guidance Document on the Estimation of LOD and LOQ for Measurements in the Field of Contaminants in Feed and Food

The European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (EURL PAH), the EURL for Heavy Metals in Feed and Food (EURL HM), the EURL for Mycotoxins (EURL Mycotoxins), and EURL for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food aim to provide with this document guidance to official food control in the EU on the estimation of the limit of quantification of analytical methods for the determination of individual substances in the field of contaminants in feed and food. The document focusses on estimation of the limit of detection (LOD) and/or limit of quantification (LOQ) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals (HM), mycotoxins, and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
The concept presented consists of two major routes: The first route responds to the requirements for determination of PAHs, HMs and Mycotoxins. The second route corresponds to PCDD/F and PCB analysis, where results are calculated as sumparameters and expressed in toxic equivalents (TEQs), converting thereby congener concentrations together with estimated LOQs using toxic equivalency factor (TEFs) into TEQs. Due to the nature of this more complex procedure, emphasis is put in the area of PCDD/F and PCB analysis on the LOQs, while LODs are of minor consequence.

EU-RL Proficiency Test on determination of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in Feed of Plant Origin 2016

This proficiency test (PT) on the determination of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs and indicator PCBs in feed of plant origin was organized by the EU-RL for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food to be performed between August and October 2016.
The objective was to assess analytical performance of laboratories and the interlaboratory comparability of results from analyses of all relevant parameters (17 PCDD/F, 12 dioxin-like PCBs, 6 indicator PCBs) in one sample of grass meal and one sample of dried basil.
In addition, this specific PT was focusing on the reliability of analytical results for PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in more complex feed matrices. Therefore, this PT was also open for other official laboratories and commercial laboratories in order to check the comparability of results not only within the EURL/NRL/OFL network, but also with official and private laboratories performing official control or self-control of feed business operators.

EU-RL Proficiency Test on determination of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in Animal Feed 2015

The proficiency test (PT) on the determination of PCDD/Fs, dioxin-like PCBs and indicator PCBs in two samples of animal feed was organized by the EU-RL for Dioxins and PCBs in Feed and Food to be performed between February and April 2015.
The objective was to assess analytical performance of laboratories and the interlaboratory comparability of results from all relevant parameters (17 PCDD/Fs, 12 dioxin-like PCBs and 6 inidcator PCBs) in two samples of animal feed.
In addition, this specific PT was focusing on the reliability of analytical results for PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs provided by GC-MS/MS. Laboratories applying GC-MS/MS detection methods are encouraged to participate in this proficiency test.
